BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Brunei has exceeded its greenhouse gas emissions reduction target under the Brunei National Climate Change Policy (BNCCP), a government minister said on Wednesday.
Speaking at a Legislative Council meeting, Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah, minister at the Prime Minister's Office and second minister of finance and economy, said the country's greenhouse gas emissions have fallen to 14.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.
This figure is lower than the target of 17.3 million tonnes. The minister attributed the achievement to a range of strategies implemented since the BNCCP was introduced in 2020.
These include efforts to reduce emissions from the industrial sector and land transportation, as well as initiatives such as reforestation and the increased use of renewable energy sources.
The minister also said that Brunei is preparing to ratify the establishment of the ASEAN Climate Change Center, for which Brunei will serve as the host country to coordinate regional climate initiatives. ■
